So excited to announce my quilt, To Everything There Is A Season, has won the Award of Excellence in Applique at Quilt Canada 2017! This quilt is superbly machine quilted by Rose Bell of Fancy Feathers.
It was a thrill just to have my quilt juried in, but to win an award is definitely the icing on the cake. For those that have asked, the complete pattern for this quilt will be available on the website mid-July. We are fine-tuning a few of the blocks, so sit tight!
Meanwhile, I am busy getting my borders ready for the current BOM, a combination of 2 patterns designed by Sue Garman. I love a border with swags on it (especially on an appliqued quilt). I just think it has such a classy look:)
First, I taped 6 copies of the swags together (each border has 6 swags on it). Then I placed the border fabric on top of the paper pattern and traced the swags. I used plastic to make a template of the swag to make tracing much easier and so much faster.
I prepped all the pieces and glued everything in place…
…and Ta Da! Let the stitching begin!
Til next time…..

Wonderful! All that work and beauty ought to win.
Thanks so much!
Congratulations on your well-deserved win, and thank you for sharing how you prep for those show-worthy swag borders. I have been working on a needle turned applique project and getting frustrated that I can’t get the pieces precisely placed from one block to another with this method. Previously I did the prepared starch and press edges and glue basted pieces in place with a light box, a few pieces at a time. But I have not tried tracing the entire block design with blue marker ahead of time. I can see how that would ensure 100% accuracy, drawing the placement lines for every piece before any stitching has a chance to draw up and distort the block.
Thanks Rebecca: Yes I trace the entire block before I do any placement of pieces. This ensures accuracy. I used to do needleturn, but since I have found this method it is the only way I applique now. Give it shot and I am sure you will love it, too!
I saw your quilt at the show and it is even more beautiful in person. You have done a wonderful job and deserve the recognition.
Thank you:) Glad you were able to see the quilt up close and personal:)
Congratulations! I have followed your process the whole time and your prize is more than well deserved. You are very talented and dedicated to your work

Congratulations!! Such a beautiful quilt.
Thanks so much:)
hats off to you and your amazing success! Well-deserved! Gratitude too for sharing techniques which makes the process much less frustrating. I am just finishing my Bed of Roses quilt and was thrilled to find your suggestion about making a plastic “window” for trimming the blocks. What source did you use for plastic. ? I am having difficulty finding a stiff plastic to use. Again, congratulations and thank you for all,you share with us. Toni
Fantastic work Kerry, and congratulations. Do you still use the starch method for your perfect applique?
Hi Sue: Yes I still use the starch method. Once I discovered it, I never looked back to needleturn!
